Motion to recommend formation of a Task Force on Environmental Policy Implementation

Presented by the University Senate Committee on the Environment

March 27, 2001

Whereas, the University Senate has this day voted to accept the Emory University Environmental Mission Statement; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the University to move forward with implementing this Mission Statement;

Be it therefore resolved, that the University Senate recommend that the President convene a Task Force on Environmental Implementation, whose charge will include:

1) Review and assessment of environmental policies and implementation strategies at other leading universities,

2) Recommendation of institutional structures and short- and long-term means through which the University as a whole and its individual units can best implement the Mission Statement,

3) Anticipation and mitigation of barriers and obstacles to smooth implementation of the Mission Statement,

4) Development of support across the University for implementation of the Mission Statement; and

Be it further resolved, that the University Senate recommend that the President consider knowledge and experience in University function, knowledge and experience in environmental issues, and senior leadership responsibility, in naming members of the Task Force; and

Be it further resolved, that the University Senate recommend that the President seek representation from all key University stakeholders in naming members of the Task Force, including standing committees of the University Senate; administrators, faculty, staff, and students; major University units; the Board of Trustees and the community, and others as appropriate; and

Be it further resolved, that the University Senate recommend to the President that the Task Force be asked to deliver its report within six to eight months of the adoption of the Mission Statement, that is, during the fall semester of 2001.
