The Watershed Ecosystem

Emory's Druid Hills campus straddles two sub-watersheds of the Chattahoochee river basin. Campus areas east of Clifton Road drain into the Candler Lake watershed. Water there runs into the South Fork of Peachtree Creek which flows westward along the eastern and northern edges of campus, joins the North Fork of Peachtree Creek near Piedmont Road, and empties eventually in the Chattahoochee. The west side of campus drains into the Peavine Creek watershed. Water there flows into Peavine Creek which runs north along the western edge of campus to join the South Fork of Peachtree Creek behind Sage Mill shopping center where Clifton Road intersects Briarcliff Road at the northern tip of campus. These two campus sub-watersheds may be further divided into sub-basins corresponding to smaller but perennially flowing creeks. They all show the same signs of excessive erosion, sedimentation, trashing, and pollution found in other streams in urban areas. Fortunately, we have the ability to restore these streams if we can summon the will. The Peavine Watershed Alliance, of which Emory is a partner, is in the process of creating a stream management plan for the entire Peavine Creek watershed that could also guide campus efforts. Here is a map of the South Peachtree Creek Watershed.
