Green Facts About Emory University

What about Emory campus as a whole? How much energy do we use? How much do we recycle? How much do we pollute? Emory has never conducted a comprehensive campus environmental audit. FMD and other administrative units have gathered some useful data, however, and we will share it here as it becomes available.

Emory Recycles has compiled collection data (tonnage and dollar receipts) since 1997. This data has been divided into Office Paper (White Paper, Mixed Paper, Magazines, and Newspaper) and Cans/Bottles/Cardboard.

From Brian Shaw, director of the Alternative Transportation Program, we have the following data on how much pollution we generate or save and how much space we use or save with regular or alternative forms of transportation.

  • Approximately 20,000 cars come to Emory every day. In 1970 there were 9290 cars registered at Emory and 7200 trips were estimated per day.
  • Participation in the Emory Alternative Transportation Program this year saved space at the university equivalent to one parking deck.
  • Emory's shuttle system is giving over 800,000 rides to individual passengers per year.
  • The entire Clifton Corridor Transportation Management Association program saved us from generating over 20 tons of the air pollutant NOx (Nitrous Oxide) last year.
  • There are currently 13,771 parking spaces on campus: 9194 in decks, 1917 visitor spaces, 678 in staff surface lots, 341 in staff gated lots, 1039 in students lots/streets, 356 at houses, 251 staff street spaces. In 1970 there were 3608 parking spaces.
