Green FactsHow many trees would you need to plant to offset your carbon emissions? How many acres of land does it take to support your lifestyle? How about Emory as a whole; what is its ecological footprint? Do you have any idea how many kilowatts of energy we expend per hour or how many tons of waste we contribute to landfills per year and how that compares per person nationwide? In these pages we try to address these questions. In the section for individuals, we enable you to calculate your ecological footprint and to test your knowledge about energy and watersheds. In the section on campus we share current data on energy use, recycling performance, waste management, and transportation issues for Emory as a whole and per person. In the "world" section we list in no particular order environmental facts of general interest from various sources. Finally, we are developing an "issues" section in which we describe some basic environmental problems and their solutionsfor example, the effect of invasive non-native species on native plants and trees, the impact of stormwater runoff on streams, and the effect of tree loss on local quality of life. |
